Whilst most of the students starting year 7 at NICS are familiar with school environment, rules and have their friends from various years levels at the same campus, there are usually four challenges for students beginning their school high experience: different teachers for each subject; new subjects; following timetables; and organisational skills.
At the start of each day, the secondary school students will meet with the year level advisors for roll call and any messages. Year advisors are the 'go to' for both students and parents should there be any general concerns or requests for information.
Students will participate in studies in Art / Music, Food Technology and Timber when they begin year 7. This is in addition to studies in English, Math, Science, History, Health & Physical Education – each with a specialist teacher. Some students take some time to adapt to working with different teachers for each subject.
Secondary students have a clear timetable with lessons being 70 minutes in length. Each student will be given their individual timetable for their weekly lessons.
One of the key skills students in the secondary area of the school need is organisation. This includes students ensuring they have all the equipment required for each lesson, in particular a charged laptop and stationery.
